Tragic Crashes Close I-95 in Brevard County on Tuesday
Hey, Space Coast community! If you were planning to hit the road on I-95 Tuesday afternoon, you might have encountered some serious disruptions. A pair of unfortunate crashes led to the closure of all southbound lanes near mile marker 230 in Mims, causing major traffic headaches for hours. By around 9 p.m., however, the interstate was reopened, much to the relief of drivers eager to get home.
The first incident struck around 1:45 p.m., when a fuel tanker experienced tire issues that caused it to veer off the road. The truck hit a concrete culvert and ended up in a ditch. Thankfully, the driver, a 48-year-old man from Lake Worth, was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center and is currently reported to be in stable condition after suffering serious injuries. However, the worst was yet to come.
Just a little over three hours later, a more devastating crash occurred just north of the first scene at mile marker 231. In this multi-car pileup, a total of five vehicles were involved, including two SUVs, a Ford truck, a Buick sedan, and a tractor-trailer. It seems the chaos began when the Chevrolet Equinox slowed for stopped traffic ahead and was rear-ended by an Acura, causing a domino effect that resulted in the Chevrolet overturning and striking the guardrail. Tragically, a 71-year-old woman from Vero Beach, who was a passenger in the Chevrolet, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The good news amid the tragedy is that some drivers involved in the crash, including a 24-year-old woman from Titusville and a 53-year-old man from Melbourne, did not suffer serious injuries and remained at the site. The driver of the Chevy was airlifted with non-life-threatening injuries, but the emotional toll of this incident is sure to linger.
With traffic being diverted at Deering Parkway, it serves as a reminder for all of us to stay cautious while on the road.
