A peculiar theft scheme involving ramen barcodes has recently unfolded down in Cape Coral, raising eyebrows and prompting discussions about shopping safety all over Florida, including right here on the Space Coast. If you thought you’ve encountered every shopping quirk possible, think again—this one takes the cake!
Meet David Crespo, a 65-year-old who was arrested after being linked to a whopping 97 thefts at a Publix supermarket. From December 2025 onwards, Crespo swapped prices at self-checkout, cleverly scanning a low-cost Maruchan ramen barcode—typically costing around $0.60—while sneaking more expensive grocery items into his bags. Let’s face it; while ramen is a staple for many, this isn’t the right way to save on a grocery trip! Store managers quickly caught on to his scheme, which implicated Crespo in nearly $2,500 of fraudulent transactions involving about 360 items.
What’s truly eye-popping is that Crespo wasn’t just a one-off case; he was actually caught again on May 14, 2026, using the very same method! Surveillance footage recorded his crafty antics, providing crucial evidence to the Property Crimes Detectives who ultimately arrested him. Talk about a recipe for disaster! When officers searched Crespo after taking him into custody, they found even more ramen barcodes in his pockets—no doubt a key ingredient to his questionable grocery tactics.
