Essential Guide: Prepare Now for Florida Hurricane Season 2023

WATCH: How to Prepare For Florida Hurricane Season Beginning June 1

Brace Yourself, Brevard: 2025 Hurricane Season Officially Begins June 1st

The countdown clock has hit zero. Hurricane season is officially upon us, Space Coast residents, and it’s time to get your preparation game on point. While we’ve enjoyed relatively calm weather lately, veteran Meteorologist Danny Treanor reminds us that Mother Nature doesn’t care about our complacency.

“Every hurricane season stands on its own,” Treanor told Space Coast Daily in a recent interview. “What happened last year has no bearing on what might happen this year.”

What Brevard County Residents Need to Know About the 2025 Hurricane Season

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially kicks off on June 1st and runs through November 30th. For those of us living in Melbourne, Palm Bay, Cocoa Beach, and throughout Brevard County, this six-month period demands our attention and preparation.

Forecasters at NOAA are predicting another above-average season, with 16-20 named storms potentially developing. Of those, 8-11 could become hurricanes, with 4-6 reaching major hurricane status (Category 3 or higher).

But as Treanor points out, “It only takes one storm hitting our area to make it a bad season for Brevard County.”

Lessons from Recent Storms

The Space Coast has experienced several close calls and direct impacts in recent years. Hurricanes Ian, Nicole, and Dorian have all affected our area to varying degrees. These storms have taught us valuable lessons about preparation, evacuation routes, and the importance of taking official warnings seriously.

I still remember scrambling for supplies before Hurricane Irma in 2017 – the empty shelves and long gas lines are something I never want to experience again. That’s why early preparation is crucial.

Your Hurricane Preparation Checklist for 2025

Getting ready for hurricane season isn’t just smart – it’s essential for Space Coast residents. Here’s what you need to do now:

  • Review your insurance policies – Make sure your home and flood insurance are up-to-date and adequate
  • Create an evacuation plan – Know your zone and have multiple routes mapped out
  • Prepare your emergency kit – At minimum, have one gallon of water per person per day for at least 3 days
  • Gather essential supplies – Non-perishable food, medications, cash, and important documents
  • Secure your property – Check for loose items that could become projectiles, trim trees, and consider hurricane shutters

The Most Essential Hurricane Supplies for Brevard Residents

Category Essential Items Recommended Quantity
Water Bottled water 1 gallon per person per day (min. 7 days)
Food Non-perishable items 7-day supply per person
Power Batteries, portable chargers, generator Multiple sizes, fully charged
Medical First aid kit, prescriptions 2-week supply of medications
Communication NOAA weather radio, portable chargers 1 per household

Know Your Evacuation Zone

Do you know if you live in an evacuation zone? Many Brevard residents don’t, and that’s a dangerous knowledge gap. Your evacuation zone is determined by your vulnerability to storm surge, not wind.

You can check your evacuation zone on the Brevard County Emergency Management website or by calling their office. Don’t wait until a storm is approaching – this information could save your life.

“The most dangerous aspect of a hurricane isn’t the wind – it’s the water,” explains Treanor. “Storm surge and flooding are responsible for most hurricane-related deaths.”

Special Considerations for Barrier Island Residents

If you live on Merritt Island, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Indian Harbour Beach, or Melbourne Beach, you face additional risks during hurricanes. Barrier islands are typically the first areas ordered to evacuate.

Remember: Once sustained tropical storm force winds begin, bridges may be closed and emergency personnel will not respond to calls. When officials say it’s time to go, don’t hesitate.

Stay Informed Throughout Hurricane Season

Knowledge is power during hurricane season. Here’s how to stay informed:

  • Download the Space Coast Daily app for real-time updates
  • Follow Brevard County Emergency Management on social media
  • Keep a battery-powered NOAA weather radio handy
  • Sign up for emergency alerts through the county’s emergency notification system

I personally keep the Space Coast Daily app on my home screen during hurricane season. Their local meteorologists provide Brevard-specific forecasts that national weather services sometimes miss.

Is Your Home Hurricane-Ready?

Beyond stocking supplies, preparing your home itself is crucial. Consider these improvements:

  • Install hurricane shutters or pre-cut plywood for windows
  • Reinforce garage doors, which are often the first to fail
  • Secure loose outdoor items that could become projectiles
  • Trim trees and shrubs away from your home
  • Check your roof for loose tiles or potential leaks

“The time to prepare your home is now, not when a storm is 48 hours away,” advises Treanor. “Hardware stores quickly run out of supplies when a hurricane watch is issued.”

Don’t Wait – Prepare Today

Hurricane season is here, Space Coast friends. While we can’t control the weather, we can control how prepared we are when storms threaten our community.

Take some time this weekend to review your hurricane plan, check your supplies, and have a family discussion about evacuation procedures. A little preparation now could make all the difference later.

Stay safe, stay informed, and let’s weather this hurricane season together.
