Florida Man Arrested After Wild I-95 Incident Near Melbourne

Early mornings on I-95 are usually quiet, but one driver turned a simple traffic stop into a dramatic police chase right here in Brevard County. Just before the sun came up on a recent Monday, things took a wild turn when a state trooper pulled over a swerving van near St. Johns Heritage Parkway, and chaos unfolded.

As the trooper approached the white Ford Transit van, he witnessed a surprising sight—seven men bolting out of the passenger side and darting into the nearby woods! One of them, 18-year-old Luis Angel Gomez Lopez from Orlando, decided he wouldn’t be caught easily. Even after being commanded to stop, Lopez attempted to sprint away, prompting the trooper to act.

The trooper tried to subdue Lopez with a Taser, but the young man was determined. In a scuffle that went down an embankment, Lopez allegedly struck the trooper in the face. Now facing charges for battery against a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest, Luis has made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Law enforcement didn’t stop with just one trooper. Additional units from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, as well as K-9 teams and drones, were deployed to locate the remaining men, but they remain on the loose. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of life on the Space Coast—where even a routine traffic stop can spiral into an unexpected adventure.

As we navigate our daily lives in iconic spots like Melbourne and Cocoa Beach, it’s crucial to remember the importance of public safety and law enforcement. If you see something unusual, don’t hesitate to report it. Let’s keep our Brevard community safe together!
