A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia on Tuesday, triggering tsunami warnings for Alaska and Hawaii and advisories for parts of the U.S. West Coast. The quake occurred roughly 85 miles off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of nearly 12 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The agency initially reported magnitudes of 8.0 and 8.7 before upgrading it to 8.8. Significant aftershocks, including magnitudes 6.3 and 6.9, were also recorded in the region. Tsunami warnings are in effect for Alaska’s Aleutian Islands and the entire state of Hawaii. California, Oregon, and Washington remain under tsunami advisories while officials assess the threat. The first tsunami wave is expected to reach Hawaii shortly after 7:15 p.m. local time (1:15 a.m. ET), with destructive waves anticipated, according to Oahu Emergency Management. Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency has activated its Emergency Operations Center, and state officials are coordinating with Governor Josh Green’s team through the Joint Information Center. As part of the statewide alert system, sirens are sounding across all Hawaiian islands every hour at 10 minutes past the hour for the next three hours.
