It’s always tough to hear about the struggles of our local wildlife, especially when it involves one of our beloved sea turtles. Today, a sad discovery was made under the Cocoa Beach pier: a loggerhead sea turtle, already showing signs of distress with a cracked shell and a heavy barnacle coating. It’s a vivid reminder of the challenges these majestic creatures face right here on the Space Coast. The recent rough surf likely pushed her against the pier’s pylons, and it seems she’s been battling debilitating conditions for some time.
As residents of Brevard County, we all love our beautiful beaches and the vibrant marine life that inhabits them. However, loggerheads and other sea turtles are constantly navigating threats, including boat strikes and entanglement. The recent weather conditions have been particularly harsh, posing additional risks for these ancient mariners already struggling to thrive in their environment. It’s a tough world out there for them, and our local ecosystem bears witness to these challenges.
If you ever come across an injured or sick sea turtle—or, sadly, a deceased one—please reach out to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922). This is more than just a call; it’s a vital connection that allows officials to track the health of our local turtle populations and take necessary action to protect them. Each report contributes to the larger effort of conservation and helps us all understand what these amazing creatures face every day.
With nesting season in full swing from March to October, it’s crucial for all of us to stay vigilant. Making sure our beaches are safe and free from obstructions can give these turtles the best opportunity to nest and succeed. Every little bit helps, from keeping our beaches clean to simply being aware of our impact on these vulnerable species.
Let’s join together as a community to ensure that our beloved turtles have the support they need. After all, we are their guardians, and it’s up to us to help make a difference, especially during these critical months.
