Could Lifeguards Become a Staple on Space Coast Beaches?
As beachgoers flock to our stunning Space Coast shores, the recent tragic drownings on Cocoa Beach have raised a critical question: should we invest more in beach safety? With a stunning coastline that draws both locals and tourists alike, the absence of lifeguards at many of our beaches is becoming a pressing concern. A Brevard County commissioner recently suggested that increasing taxes might be the solution to ensuring lifeguards are on duty at every beach, enhancing safety for everyone.
This week’s unfortunate incidents, where two individuals drowned far from lifeguard oversight, highlight a glaring gap in our beach safety protocols. The victims, discovered nearly a mile away from the nearest lifeguard tower, remind us that the ocean can be unpredictable, especially with the presence of rip currents. Cocoa Beach, one of our popular spots, has been especially affected, reporting earlier this year that it’s not just a fluke—people are risking their lives swimming where there is no safety net.
County Commissioner Thad Altman acknowledged the issue when asked about the possibility of extending lifeguard services. “It would be a significant budget increase,” he stated, emphasizing that while tourists contribute through a tourism tax, it likely won’t cover the costs needed to ensure safety on all our beaches. It’s a tough balancing act: prioritizing safety while considering the financial implications for residents.
Currently, Brevard County is in talks to hire 45 new lifeguards, but that is merely addressing a shortage rather than a comprehensive solution for beach safety across the coast. As some residents may be willing to pay extra for added security, we should consider whether a slight tax increase is worth the peace of mind that comes from knowing lifeguards are watching over our loved ones.
So, what can we as a community do? It starts with conversation and advocacy. With your input, our local leaders can make informed decisions about resource allocation for lifeguard services. Let’s make sure safety is a top priority on our beautiful beaches. What do you think, Space Coast? Drop your thoughts below.
