As we gear up for the looming 2026 Atlantic hurricane season here on the Space Coast, recent news about FEMA could directly impact our community’s disaster preparedness. In a move that has locals buzzing, the agency is bringing back disaster workers who were previously let go back in January, just ahead of what could be another unpredictable storm season for Brevard County.
In a court filing last week, the U.S. Attorney revealed that FEMA is reaching out to term-limited staff to reoffer positions, particularly those folks known as COREs—our frontline heroes who step in right after hurricanes wreak havoc. These are the dedicated individuals who set up recovery centers, help families navigate emergency paperwork, and support long-term rebuilding efforts in our neighborhoods. With the Atlantic hurricane season officially starting on June 1, having a full roster of disaster workers on hand is more critical than ever for our coastal cities like Melbourne, Cocoa Beach, and Titusville.
Back in January, when FEMA first chose not to renew contracts for around 159 COREs, concerns were raised that this was part of a larger plan to cut the agency’s workforce by half. As someone living on the Space Coast, these changes hit particularly close to home. Any reduction in FEMA’s capabilities can delay assistance and mean longer recovery times for our community if we do face another major storm—after all, it only takes one hurricane to cause significant disruption.
While forecasts for the upcoming season vary, with some projecting a quieter year and others warning of heightened activity, there’s no denying that Florida’s weather can turn on a dime. In 2025, for example, we faced three devastating Category 5 hurricanes. So, having an effective FEMA response is crucial for communities like ours. And although the federal government has recently reinstated some of those essential positions, questions linger on whether this was a necessary response or a sign of deeper issues within FEMA’s management.
As we countdown to hurricane season, it’s a relief to hear FEMA is re-engaging vital staff. Our local communities rely heavily on these workers to ensure safety and recovery post-storm. Will they accept the offers to return? This decision will undoubtedly shape how swiftly and effectively help reaches us if Hurricane Season brings its fury to the Space Coast.
