Melbourne Native Jacob Fowler Takes Aim at NHL Playoffs with the Canadiens
If you’re a hockey fan on the Space Coast, you’ve likely heard about 21-year-old Jacob Fowler’s impressive rise in the world of professional hockey. As a proud product of Melbourne, Florida, Fowler is gearing up to make waves this playoff season with the Montreal Canadiens, and locals are buzzing with excitement for their hometown hero.
Fowler’s journey began right here in Brevard County, where he honed his skills at Suntree Elementary and later at Edgewood Junior/Senior High School. From those early days—strapping on roller skates at just 2 years old to join local youth teams—it’s clear that dedication runs deep in his story. In pursuit of stronger competition, he made grueling three-hour commutes to Estero to play with the Florida Alliance. That commitment to the sport has certainly paid off as Fowler now stands among the NHL’s rising stars.
After high school, Fowler took his talents to Boston College, where he made a splash during his freshman season, claiming the title of Hockey East Goaltender of the Year. His sophomore year only solidified his reputation, as he notched an impressive save percentage of .940 and picked up the Mike Richter Award for being the top college goaltender. Transitioning to the professional stage, Fowler has continued to deliver solid performances in his first full season with the Canadiens, boasting a 9-6-2 record, a respectable 2.43 goals-against average, and even a shutout to his name.
But he hasn’t just stopped there. With the Laval Rocket in the AHL, his stats are even more eye-popping, including a 19-7-1 record and three shutouts. This performance places him among the top goaltenders in the AHL and has made him a key player in Montreal’s plans for the future. As the Canadiens prepare for the playoffs against the Tampa Bay Lightning, all eyes will be on Fowler to see if he can cement his status as a go-to goalie.
