Remembering Rocky: A Life of Service, Community, and Resilience

In the heart of Brevard County, Florida, a remarkable community servant left an indelible mark on the lives of those around him. Rocco David “Rocky” Veltri, a beacon of dedication and compassion, passed away on December 28, 2024, at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy that transcends generations.

The Early Years: Roots of a Hard-Working Immigrant Family

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Rocky was the ninth child of Italian immigrants who embodied the quintessential American dream. Growing up in Aspinwall, he learned the values of hard work, community, and perseverance from his family. His high school years at Aspinwall High School were marked by athletic prowess, playing football and basketball with the same intensity he would later apply to his professional and volunteer work.

A Career on the Rails: More Than Just a Job

Rocky’s professional journey with the Pennsylvania Railroad (Conrail) spanned over three decades, where he rose to the position of Train-master before retiring in 1996. But Rocky was never just about work – he brought joy and community spirit to his role, famously bringing McGruff the Crime Dog to life during Santa Train events and community gatherings.

Retirement: A New Chapter of Community Service

After relocating to Cocoa Beach in 1998, Rocky didn’t slow down. Instead, he embraced retirement with the same energy he had throughout his life. Working at local spots like Coastal Coffee and Juice ‘n Java, he continued to be a familiar face in the community. His volunteer work at Cape Canaveral Hospital and Our Savior Catholic Church demonstrated that for Rocky, service was a calling, not just an occupation.

A Pillar of the Community: Knights of Columbus and Beyond

As a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4826 in Cocoa Beach, Rocky exemplified the organization’s principles of charity, unity, and fraternity. His commitment to service extended far beyond his professional life, touching countless lives through his volunteer work and community engagement.

Family: The Core of His Legacy

Behind every great man is a supportive family, and Rocky was no exception. Married for 56 years to his devoted wife Barbara Ann (Asklar) Veltri, he left behind a rich family legacy. His children Roxanne and Francis, along with six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, continue to carry forward the values of hard work, compassion, and community service that Rocky embodied.

A Final Farewell

A memorial service will be held at Our Savior Catholic Church on January 18, 2025, at 10:30 am – a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to his community. Rocky’s life reminds us that true wealth is measured not by material possessions, but by the lives we touch and the love we share.

The Rocky Veltri Legacy: Lessons for Us All

Rocky’s journey teaches us that retirement isn’t about slowing down, but about finding new ways to contribute. His life was a masterclass in community service, showing that age is just a number when it comes to making a difference.
