Sad Farewell: Smokey Bones Closes Its Melbourne Location
It’s never easy to say goodbye, especially when it comes to beloved local spots. As of April 28, 2026, the Smokey Bones restaurant near Melbourne Square Mall has officially closed its doors for good, leaving a familiar void in Brevard County’s dining scene. Many of us have fond memories of gathering with friends and family for BBQ ribs or enjoying a game day celebration there.
Signs of the closure crept in quietly but swiftly. Patrons noticed that the restaurant’s website had updated its hours to list the location as “closed,” while unanswered phone calls and sparse updates on social media raised concerns. This sudden shutdown isn’t an isolated incident; it appears part of a larger trend affecting the chain across the country. Although Smokey Bones has been a part of our community for over a decade, the announcement left many locals feeling a bit shocked.
The shake-up comes on the heels of a turbulent couple of years for Smokey Bones’ parent company, FAT Brands, which acquired the chain in 2023. Just last January, they filed for bankruptcy protection in hopes of restructuring, sending ripples through the company. This year, the Birmingham, Alabama-based FAT Brands announced plans to reorganize the business, including the unsettling news that they would be closing or converting many locations, including ours.
For the Melbourne spot specifically, the loss of Smokey Bones feels personal. Many of us have shared laughs and celebrations within its walls. As FAT Brands attempts to pivot and shape a new direction, it’s tough to think about what’s next for casual dining in Brevard County. With such change on the horizon, we’re left wondering what will fill this gap and how it will affect our community vibe.
