Palm Bay has a hidden story lurking on its southwestern edge, and it’s one that many Brevard County residents may not be aware of. The Compound, a sprawling 2,321-acre plot, was initially envisioned as a vibrant residential community. Unfortunately, that dream faded when its original owner went bankrupt back in 1991, leaving the land largely untouched and increasingly associated with unsettling events over the years.
Recent years have seen the area transformed into a backdrop for some alarming headlines. For instance, in March 2026, authorities were called to Bombardier Boulevard after a suitcase, which was being scavenged by vultures, contained human remains. The discovery shocked the local community and led to the arrest of 19-year-old Lucas Jones from Indialantic, further heightening the calls for action to revitalize this neglected area. Palm Bay’s City Council, led by Councilman Kenny Johnson, responded by applying for a $3 million state grant aimed at developing utilities in The Compound, with hopes of fostering a new era of development and safety.
In December 2025, the dark narrative continued with a high-profile case that rocked our community. Daniel Stearns, sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Nancy Howery, was found guilty of killing the 44-year-old after a troubling online relationship turned fatal. Her dismembered remains were discovered scattered throughout the Compound, and it’s a reminder that we still have work to do in making our neighborhood safer and more secure.
The city is not standing still, however. The introduction of “The Compound Redevelopment Action Plan” in April 2025 marks a pivotal step forward. The ambitious project aims to transform the area into a bustling business and industrial park, promising 2,500 new jobs and nearly $2 million in annual tax revenue. With plans for 960,000 square feet of new construction, the hope here is to change the narrative and create a more positive picture for the future of Palm Bay and the surrounding areas in Brevard County.
