If you’re in Brevard County this weekend, you won’t want to miss the thunderous excitement heading straight for Cocoa Beach. Instead of rocket launches lighting up the sky, it’s the roar of speedboats that will take center stage as the Thunder on Cocoa Beach Super Boat Grand Prix kicks off! This thrilling event, now in its 17th year, promises to bring high speeds and even higher stakes, with up to 80 teams revving up for the competition.
Local families like the Turks are set to make waves at this event. Cameron Turk, a proud 19-year-old Cocoa Beach native, is following in the footsteps of his dad, JJ Turk, who has been racing for over a decade. For Cameron, speedboat racing isn’t just a hobby—it’s a lifelong passion he embraced when he was just 6 years old. “I kicked off my racing career with a little 22 Nitro and even snagged a world championship,” Cameron reminisced, showing just how deep his roots run in the sport. With both father and son now competing, this weekend transforms into a family affair, united by their love for adrenaline-fueled competition.
As JJ puts it, the boats they race are no ordinary vessels. With lengths of up to 50 feet and a staggering 2,200 horsepower, these machines can reach top speeds of 160 mph! It’s hardly just a Sunday joyride—the East Coast’s ocean waves present a challenging course, especially known for being one of the toughest races on the circuit. “We have real swells out there,” JJ explained, underscoring the excitement spectators can expect just off the Cocoa Beach shoreline.
The anticipated turnout is massive, with more than 100,000 spectators expected to gather along the beach to watch the action unfold. JJ, who also owns a local hotel, has many of the race teams staying with him, contributing to over $12 million in economic impact for our beloved Space Coast. Talk about a community celebration!
What’s more, the event offers a unique chance for fans to get an up-close look at the speedboats and meet the drivers. “The pits are open to the public, which is a rare opportunity in motorsports,” shared Lucy Nicandri from the International Hot Rod Association. So whether you’re a die-hard racing fan or just looking for a fun day out, Thunder on Cocoa Beach promises an exhilarating experience. After all, one of these competitors could be the next 2026 champion!
