MELBOURNE — Did You Feel That?
Space Coast residents know a thing or two about rumbles, especially with all the rocket launches happening at Cape Canaveral. But Monday’s shake-up around 2 p.m. had a different origin—one that surprised many in Brevard County. A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the west coast of Cuba, sending tremors that reached our area, catching many folks off guard and leaving them wondering if a rocket had just lifted off.
This earthquake, recorded as one of the strongest ever in the Gulf of America, originated about 467 miles from Melbourne. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it took place beneath the Gulf at a depth of around 16 miles. Seismologists classified it as an intraplate earthquake, indicating it occurred within a tectonic plate rather than along a more common plate boundary. While Florida may not typically be known for seismic activity, this powerful event reminded us that sometimes, the ground can shake from places much farther away.
Social media buzzed with chatter as residents took to Facebook and local apps to share their experiences. Many, including weather expert Mike Boylan, were shocked by the suddenness of the tremors. “Everything shook. Panic definitely was in the air,” he stated, reflecting the feelings of those who found it surprising that something like this could happen in our sunny state.
Back in 1880, a magnitude 6.0 quake in Cuba was felt as far as Florida, a historical note that reminds us that seismic events can be connected across distances. Thankfully, Monday’s earthquake didn’t result in significant damage or injuries, and no tsunami warnings were issued—just some rattled nerves. Residents are encouraged to report their experiences through the USGS’s “Did You Feel It?” program, helping scientists understand how widely the tremor was felt.
In the end, Monday’s quake proved to be a rare phenomenon that had folks in Brevard County talking. As we gear up for more launches in the future, let’s remember that not every rumble comes from the Space Coast’s aerospace activities!
