Tiny Home Scams on the Rise: What Brevard County Residents Need to Know
If you’ve been dreaming about trading in the hustle and bustle for a cozy tiny home right here in Brevard County, you’re not alone! With housing costs climbing, many are exploring the tiny home trend. However, as we’ve seen locally, this interest has unfortunately opened the door for crafty scammers ready to take advantage of hopeful buyers.
At Movable Roots in Melbourne, where they’ve been crafting custom modular homes for over a decade, worries are mounting as scammers have started using their images to lure unsuspecting customers. “These scammers are preying on folks who may not be doing their homework,” explains Mike Cheatham, a key player at Movable Roots. It’s disheartening to think that dreams of a tiny home can quickly turn into nightmares due to mere negligence.
A quick scroll through Facebook Marketplace might reveal some too-good-to-be-true listings for tiny homes. One of these listings could showcase a beautiful home, originally crafted by Movable Roots, with a jaw-dropping price of $40,000 instead of the actual market value of around $165,000. These tricks involve asking for hefty deposits — often around $5,000 — and leaving hopeful buyers high and dry. Some have already fallen victim; take Kayla Morgan, who shared her painful story of losing her entire savings in a scam for a home that never showed up.
What’s worse is that these scams are becoming increasingly common, to the point where people have banded together on social media to expose these fraudsters. One such Facebook group lists known scammers and offers a community for victims to share their experiences. If you plan to invest in a tiny home, it’s essential to remain vigilant. Just last week, an ad for a “Nurses Model” tiny house priced at an alluring $18,000 raised red flags, as a quick image search linked it back to Movable Roots’ actual $165,000 home. Always verify before you buy!
Mike Cheatham emphasizes the importance of doing thorough research before making any purchase. Insisting on a live walkthrough and researching the company’s credibility can help steer you clear of these scams. “Know who you’re buying from before sending your hard-earned money,” he advises. This is especially critical here on the Space Coast, where so many are embracing the tiny home lifestyle out of necessity or desire.
