Melbourne Mom Moves from Homelessness to Homeownership with a 3D-Printed Home
In a heartening tale of hope and resilience, one Melbourne mom is inspiring the Space Coast community with her remarkable journey from homelessness to homeownership. Mariah Humphries, who once faced the unimaginable challenge of living in the woods while pregnant, is now unpacking boxes in Florida’s first 3D-printed home, courtesy of Space Coast Habitat for Humanity. As she gives a tour of her new home, complete with a cozy living room and a bright kitchen, Humphries beams with excitement. “This is my space,” she says, pointing out each room. Just a few years ago, Humphries was navigating life’s uncertainties while carrying her baby girl, Ava. “For me, it’s more of a safe space,” she explained, reflecting on how owning a home has profoundly changed her outlook. “I don’t have to bounce around anymore. I now have a home that I can call my own.”
Humphries attributes her journey to the support she received from the New Life Mission, where she joined a program designed for homeless women and children. Entering the program in 2021, she began to lay the foundation for a stable future, working full time, attending classes, and raising Ava. Along with meeting her personal goals, she also completed the sweat-equity hours required by Space Coast Habitat for Humanity, contributing to the construction of homes for other families.
Her determination to break the cycle that affected her family shaped her path. “I decided to change the chain my family had. I wanted to ensure my daughter did not face the same struggles,” Humphries emphasized. It’s this kind of grit and determination that reminds us all of the incredible community spirit that thrives in Brevard County.
Constructed using innovative 3D-printing technology developed by Apis Cor, this home represents not just a leap in construction methods but a profound symbol of hope for families in need across the Space Coast. While the technology may be cutting-edge, for Humphries, it’s the comfort of a safe and permanent home that matters most. “I didn’t care how it was built, as long as it was a home.” And now, thanks to her hard work and community support, Humphries and Ava have a bright future ahead.
