Tragic News: Local Truck Driver Found Dead After Hijacking Incident

It’s hard to grasp the unsettling realities that sometimes lurk in our own backyard here on the Space Coast. Just recently, a tragic story unfolded that strikes close to home for many in our community. Alejandro Jacomino Gonzalez, a 41-year-old truck driver who had just stopped at a rest area on I-95 in Grant-Valkaria, was found dead in Georgia after his vehicle was hijacked. This heartbreaking occurrence raises significant concerns about safety for truck drivers and travelers alike in Brevard County.

Gonzalez had picked up a load of vehicles from the Port of Brunswick in Georgia, intending to deliver them to Miami when he made a pit stop at the Brevard rest area. After resting for several hours, Gonzalez’s truck was seen leaving the area, but he soon became unreachable. Unfortunately, his vehicle was discovered later that day in Port Wentworth, Georgia, without him and missing several of the vehicles he was transporting. While three of those missing vehicles have since been recovered in Florida, many remain unaccounted for, further complicating a troubling scenario.

The FBI is actively investigating this case as a hijacking incident dubbed the “Brevard County Car Hauler Hijacking.” Authorities from the Tampa and Atlanta field offices are urging anyone who may have been at or near the Grant-Valkaria rest area in the early hours of April 17 to step forward. They hope to gather any photos, dashcam footage, or information that could shed light on this grim event, especially footage from the southern end of the rest area near the on-ramp.

In light of this incident, drivers everywhere are feeling the impact. Ernesto Gutierrez, a seasoned driver and the president of the Professional Trucking Association Group, expressed how González’s death has deeply shaken the trucking community. He highlighted the worrying trend of cargo theft and is calling for enhanced protections, including potentially allowing truck drivers to carry firearms for self-defense.

As Brevard County residents, this story reminds us of the importance of community vigilance and support for those who work tirelessly on our roads and highways. We often overlook the risks that come with such jobs, but incidents like this bring those concerns to the forefront. What do you think, Space Coast? Drop your thoughts below.
