Spotting Alligators and Crocodiles: A Guide for Space Coast Residents

As Brevard County residents, we’re fortunate to live in a region rich with wildlife — and that includes some of nature’s most fascinating reptiles: the American alligator and the American crocodile. While our beloved alligators are often seen lazing about in our freshwater lakes and swamps, locals might be surprised to learn that their less frequent cousin, the American crocodile, shares Florida’s unique landscape. In fact, Florida is the only place on earth where both species enjoy the same home!

So, how can you tell these remarkable reptiles apart? Well, alligators are the ones with the round “U”-shaped snout, and when their mouths are closed, you’ll typically only see their upper teeth. In contrast, crocodiles sport a narrow “V”-shaped snout, displaying both their upper and lower teeth when they shut their jaws. Alligators usually flaunt a dark gray hue, while crocodiles lean toward a lighter brownish-gray. Though both reside in the Sunshine State, alligators are found practically everywhere in Florida, while crocodiles prefer our coastal brackish water — making a southern Florida adventure somewhat more exciting!

While they may prefer different habitats, alligators and crocodiles have a lot in common. Both reptiles are known to cross land occasionally when moving between water sources, and don’t worry: they’re not on the prowl for a snack during those strolls. When it heats up, you might catch a crocodile “gaping” with its mouth open to cool off, just like its alligator counterpart. Understanding their behaviors can make our outdoor adventures much more enjoyable and safe!

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) encourages us all to stay informed about our local wildlife. If you spot an alligator or crocodile in your backyard or near your favorite fishing spot, the best approach is to keep a safe distance. And remember, never feed these magnificent creatures! Feeding them can lead to some dangerous situations, as they might lose their natural caution and start approaching people for food.

For those of you who enjoy the great outdoor wonders of the Space Coast, be sure to explore the resources provided by the FWC to learn more about living harmoniously with our local alligator and crocodile populations. Stay informed, and let’s keep Brevard County’s natural beauty thriving!
